Project Summary

Photo-kabada is a remotely monitored hybrid phototherapy machine capable of treating multiple babies with jaundice remotely. Currently, more than 60% of newborn babies globally develop neonatal jaundice, which potentially causes brain complications if untreated. The treatment, a special blue light called Phototherapy is only available to about 12% of babies in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is because of the current devices are costly, treat one baby at a time and rely on power from the national grid. Photo-Kabada, designed by scientists from Uganda has a solar powered battery that lasts 96 hours, treats 3 babies simultaneously, remotely monitors vital signs in real time and offers remote machine diagnostics. It is able to treat three children with jaundice at less price, space and power considerations versus one child for the current devices. Currently it is at pre-market stage. More about the device can be found on www.photokabada.ug
