Project Summary

"SULA LABS is a research-led product development & testing laboratory that develops products for Black-owned brands and dark skinned consumers. By aligning with the Black beauty consumer and providing an efficient full-stack R&D service, SULA LABS ultimately advances the future of the Black beauty category. Consumers can find some of our clients in retailers such as Ulta Beauty, CVS, Sephora, Target, and Credo Beauty. SULA LABS holds official strategic partnerships with Good Face Project for AI-powered regulatory screening, and Product Society for manufacturing, and California State University Dominguez-Hills for raw material bioassays. According to a 2023 Aveeno consumer study, 48% of African Americans feel that the current skincare market does not meet their needs. Furthermore, clinical efficacy studies on skincare products do not traditionally include more than 15-20% of patients with Fitzpatrick IV-VI skin types (darker skin tones). Research studies that have been conducted at SULA LABS include ex vivo reconstructed epidermis tissue studies with cells collected from dark skinned donors, and consumer studies with darker skinned consumers."
